Dans le domaine de la télévision amateur, les records de distance n'étaient, jusqu'à présent, homologués que par publication et nulle organisation n'en tenait la liste. Pour combler cette lacune, HB9AFO s'est proposé de fonctionner comme organe d'enregistrement (d'abord via le SWISS ATV lorsqu'il en était le président, maintenant à titre personnel pour maintenir la pérennité de cette fonction d'enregistrement). Pour ce faire, il tient à jour la liste des records homologués et veille à leur publication. Concrètement, les records figurent sur une liste maintenue constamment à jour en fonction des renseignements reçus des recordmen eux-même et par ceux que HB9AFO aura sollicités. Afin de donner une indication sur l'évolution historique de chaque record, les anciens sont maintenus sur la liste de façon à situer le progrès qualitatif de chaque nouvelle liaison.
Il est clair que le but d'un record n'est pas de s'auto-congratuler mais d'informer les autres passionnés des progrès réalisés. Les renseignements techniques qui y figurent permettent de donner un ordre de grandeur de ce qu'il est possible de faire avec un matériel donné.

On pourrait polémiquer sur le fait d'homologuer les records car il
est clair que ceux qui "mettent le paquet" pour aller de plus en plus loin
"coupent l'herbe sous les pieds" de ceux qui utilisent des moyens
"normaux", leur enlèvent en quelques sorte leurs illusions. Il ne faut
cependant pas se leurrer: la technique avance sans cesse et ceux qui sont à la pointe de
la technique ne le sont pas devenus grâce à un coup de baguette magique. A titre
d'exemple, F1JSR et moi-même avons perfectionnée nos équipements et notre
"expertise" du trafic pendant de longues années. En ce qui me concerne
(HB9AFO), j'ai débuté sur 10GHz en 1988, et cette année déjà, je réalisais mon
premier qso ATV sur cette bande. Cela fait donc des années que je perfectionne sans cesse
mon équipement. C'est paradoxal mais mon premier qso sur 10 GHz l'a été en ATV (avec
moi-même hélas car j'étais seul à l'époque). J'ai fait ensuite un peu de FM large
bande mais ensuite toute mon activité s'est concentrée sur l'ATV et essentiellement sur
10 GHz.
Un record peut être le fruit d'un hasard, d'un coup de propagation et cela devrait
encourager les nouveaux-venus car, finalement, tout est possible. L'important n'est
cependant pas de battre un record et de "devenir le plus fort" mais d'apprendre,
de se forger une expérience, d'explorer des chemins inconnus et, en fin de compte, de
faire avancer la technique. A l'instar des grandes découvertes, nos modestes expériences
participent à la grande aventure de l'humanité.
Pour en terminer avec un note pratique: le mot "record" est quasi-magique pour les médias et peut contribuer à nous créer une bonne image médiatique, ce qui peut s'avérer utile lors de négociations de toutes sortes. HB9AFO veillera donc à la publication médiatique des nouvelles homologations.
Si vous effectuez une liaison ATV qui vous semble être un record, faites-nous parvenir le plus possible d'informations afin que cette performance ne soit pas qu'une suite de chiffres mais constitue une base de données historique de la progression de nos techniques. Nous pourrions ainsi en faire profiter toute la communauté des ATV'istes en les publiant dans nos journeaux et sur Internet. Ce serait pour le plus grand plaisir de tout le monde!
Pour qu'un record soit validable, il faut que distance soit supérieure d'au moins 5 % à celle du record précédent. A distance égale, le QSO considéré comme "RECORD" sera celui qui aura été fait (conditions cumulatives):

In the domain of the television amateur, the distance records have not been, until now, recorded and recognized officially by a publication and no organization has maintained the list. To fill this gap, HB9AFO will function as the organ of recording and recognition. To do this, he will hold the composite list of accepted records and keep them current and availablebased upon the data sollicited by him and as submitted by those claiming a new record.
In order to give an indication of the historical evolution of each record, the old records are maintained on the list in order to show the qualitative progress of each new performance. It is clear that the goal of a new record is not self-congratulation but to inform the others interested in the progress achieved. The technical information that we find there will permit seeing that which can be done with a specific equipment configuration.
One could debate the act of recording and recognizing these records for it is clear that those who put forth the effort to go further and further "cut the grass" under the feet of those who use the normal means by removing in some way their illusions of high achievement. It is not necessary to use a lure, however, technical advances move forward without ceasing and those who are at the point of the technical advance are not there as a result of being touched by a magic wand.

To illustrate by an example, Serge, F1JSR and myself have perfected
our equipments and our expertise in ATV operations on the microwave frequencies during
several long years. Concerning myself, HB9AFO, I started on 10 GHz in 1988 and in that
year, I made my first ATV QSO on this band. This makes, therefore, many years that I have
perfected my equipment without ceasing. It is paradoxical but I made my first QSO on 10
GHz en ATV with myself as I was the only station active at that time. I have continued
with wide-band FM with my buddies of the RAV Club, Radio Amateurs Vaudois, but afterwards
all my activities were concentrated on ATV and mostly on 10 GHZ.
A record can be the fruit of an "accident", a great "skip" condition of the propagation and this should encourage the newcomers, that, finally, all is possible. That which is important is not however to beat the record and become the "strongest" but to learn and to forge a positive experience, to explore the unknown routes, and, at the end of the count to have advanced the technique. Following the example of some major discoveries, our modest records participate in the big adventure of humanity. To end on a practical note, the word "record" is quasi-magic for the medias (newspapers, radios, TV...) and can contribute to create for us a good media image, specially useful at the time of negotiations of all sorts. HB9AFO will stay current with publication of new records with maximum media coverage.
If you have made an ATV QSO which seems to you to be a record, tell us as rapidly as possible with as much information as you can. In order that this performance will not be just some numbers but will constitute a data base of the historical progression of our technique. You have only to fill the following form:

To be eligible for a new record, the distance must be at minimum 5 % more than this of the previous record. For a same distance, the QSO that will be considered as "the record" will be (cumulative conditions):
